Turkish Textile Manufacturers Look to Egypt Amid Economic Pressures and Rising Production Costs
As Türkiye’s textile sector faces mounting economic pressure, including rising input costs, inflation, and workforce reductions, a growing number of manufacturers are eyeing Egypt as a strategic alternative for textile production. This trend was clearly reflected during a recent business mission organized by the Apparel Export Council of Egypt in collaboration with Turkish stakeholders in Istanbul, aiming to enhance bilateral cooperation and attract new investments to Egypt’s expanding textile base.
Egypt is positioning itself as a regional textile hub, offering Turkish manufacturers a compelling combination of lower production costs, government incentives, and strategic access to global markets. The country’s textile ecosystem is further supported by investment-friendly zones such as the Suez Canal Economic Zone and the Minya industrial area, which provide logistical advantages and access to a reliable, skilled workforce.
According to insights shared during the bilateral meetings, nearly 60% of Egypt’s textile exports are directed to the United States, underlining the country’s potential as a gateway to high-demand international markets. Egypt’s longstanding reputation for high-quality cotton, particularly its globally recognized long-staple variety, also continues to attract premium international buyers looking for consistent quality in apparel manufacturing.
The sourcing mission in Istanbul created a productive platform for over 20 Egyptian ready-made garment manufacturers to meet face-to-face with key Turkish buyers and stakeholders. The meetings highlighted Egypt’s commitment to reducing red tape, offering direct export subsidies, and enhancing cooperation with regional partners like Türkiye.
With over 1,700 Turkish companies already active in Egypt and approximately 200 textile factories operated by Turkish investors, the trend toward production relocation is gaining momentum. Industry leaders increasingly see Egypt not just as a cost-effective solution but as a long-term strategic base to serve Europe, the United States, and Africa.
As Egyptian authorities continue to actively promote apparel exports in regional and European markets—including through initiatives like recent workshops targeting the Polish market—the partnership between Egypt and Türkiye’s textile sectors appears to be entering a new and promising chapter.
