The apparel industry of Tunisia has been hit hard by the pandemic as well as the political turmoil in the country. Exports dropped significantly by 90.93 per cent to $25.03 million towards the end of the second quarter of this year from $276.01 million in March 2021. However, they are expected to recover in the second half of this year.
The political system of Tunisia was jolted by President Kais Saied’s decision to call for the emergency act, Article 80, last month. He also fired the Prime Minister and suspended the Parliament and has now taken charge of the executive powers. Saied has appointed acting ministers in the parliament instead of cabinet ministers and has promised to appoint a new leader.
The country’s exports had fallen to $25.03 million in June 2021, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market analysis tool TexPro. However, they are expected to rise significantly by 520.57 per cent to reach $155.35 million in December 2021.
The US has provided 1 million vaccine doses to Tunisia to help tackle its economic and pandemic issues. According to the US National Security Advisor, US would strongly support the Tunisian people and its democratic structure.
The country’s UGTT trade union body also supports President Kais Saied and is in talks with him to form a new stable government.
